patron gran

Patron is probably the most famous premium tequila available. Founded by the legendary Casa Siete Leguas distillers, it was created and shaped by tradition. For example, they still cook the pina in stone ovens and extract the juice with a Tahona wheel (a large stone wheel that crushes the roasted pinas) – both methods that take much more time in production.  However, the product speaks for itself.

The tequila is so good, in fact, that the introduction of their basic line of Anejo, Reposado and Platinum, changed the entire tequila landscape. Most all brands now offer a premium line which is the comparable line to Patron’s entry level tequilas.

Not content to do what everyone else was doing, Patron decided to make an even better line of tequilas – the Gran Line. Specifically, they created two new exquisite tequilas…. the Gran Patron Platinum and the Gran Patron Burdeos Anejo.

Both of these amazingly delicious spirits are made with specially selected Weber Blue Agave plants. Those plants that are selected are especially rich in juices and sugar.  When baked, they create an even more flavorful tequila.

They are also both triple distilled to remove all impurities. Every Gran Patron bottle is also a handmade crystal (lead free) piece of art that is hand polished, hand signed and numbered with an etched label. Each bottle is surrounded by velvet and embraced in a hand-made, violin quality, curly maple wood box. Like each bottle, every box is a hand-crafted, collectible piece of art that is signed and numbered by its craftsman. To round out the luxury, the Platinum is even rested for a brief time in oak before being bottled.

Likewise, the Gran Patron Burdeos Anejo is a simply astonishing work of art. After its initial distillation, it is placed in barrels with a mix of American and French oak for 12 months. Then the tequila is distilled one more time (after aging), before being barreled and racked once again in select vintage Bordeaux barrels from France (Burdeos means Bordeaux in Spanish).

The Gran Patron Platinum is billed as the smoothest sipping tequila ever produced. It has a satiny-smooth texture and mouthfeel, with slight spice and pepper. The nose is black pepper and citrus. This is delicious neat or on the rocks.

The Gran Patron Burdeos Anejo is in a class by itself. It is a beautiful amber color with a bouquet of florals and fruit. It has a creamier mouthfeel and lingering finish. The taste is sweet with a blend of dark fruits, nuts, and raisins. This is like a fine cognac… to be sipped from a snifter and warmed in the hand.  I guarantee the experience is an amazing one!

These two tequilas are certainly not inexpensive, with pricing of about $200 and $400 respectively, but they are so worth it. Investing in a bottle of each will bring you years of pleasure (if you sip occasionally, of course). Be sure to treat yourself!

So, if you are a little reluctant to purchase a full bottle of either, or if you prefer to taste either before purchasing, we carry both of them in the Adobe Cantina y Tequileria at La Posta and would be thrilled to pour a snifter of each! Salud!
